Kathy Carper (center), Scholarship Chair presents a $500 scholarship to Sandy Stoner and Tracy Miller
The Grayslake Greenery Garden Club is proud to announce the 2009-2010 scholarship winners!
This year the Club presented a $500 scholarship to two very worthy applicants.
Sandy Stoner and Tracy Miller, both CLC students.  Ms. Stoner is pursuing a longtime interest in horticulture and Ms. Miller is interested in the ever growing green industry.  Congratulations to this years two winners!

The Grayslake Greenery Garden Club encourages all students who are pursuing a career in the field of horticulture studies to apply. Applications for next years scholarships will be posted in December of 2009.

Club Field Trips
Club members get a private tour of the Volo Bog
Fundraiser
In May the club prepares flowers for the Grayslake Park Districts Annual Dance Recital.
Volunteers assemble the flowers according to pre-orders by the parents of the dance recital participants. After assembling, they group each type of bouquet into buckets for distribution. The day of the recital volunteers handout pre-orders and make up bouquets for last minute sales.
Funds raised from this event goes toward the Club's scholarship fund, community projects and Club expenses.

Every Spring the Club holds their annual sale.
Club members prepare potted plants from their gardens and deliver them the day of the sale. There's always a variety of healthy home grown plants. The sale runs from 9:00 am-noon and is held the end of May.
Funds raised are used toward Club scholarships, community projects and Club expenses.

Club Projects
The Horticulture Committee works with the Grayslake Senior Center planting containers and several inground beds around the building. Nancy Rinker, the committee chair, and several club members volunteer their time helping the seniors maintain the containers. The seniors help with the dead heading and watering. They have fun digging, watering and growing!

The seniors also enjoy the Wednesday morning garden therapy activities sponsored by the club. The committee puts together nine of these programs for the seniors at the center.

Paula Engelman chairs a group at Hawley Manor.  They maintain several pots and inground beds there.

In May of 2006 the club leased a 20 x 20 lot in the Grayslake Community Garden. Several club members teamed up with Pack 451 Cub Scouts to grow food for the local food pantry. The scout group named themselves the "Cub Sprouts". An assortment of vegetables were grown from plants and seeds. The boys from Pack 451 participated in the planting, watering, weeding and harvesting of over 200 lbs. of food that was donated to a local food pantry.

The Youth Garden Project continues this summer for the fourth year with a 40 x 20 plot. Crops will be grown that do well in the space.  Tomatoes, beans, potatoes, kale, carrots, beets are a few of the successful plants that have been harvested by the "Cub Sprouts".  Each year the yield increases, hopefully this year the weather will allow the Club to donate a record crop.
